Restitution

Returning what an offender took, or its value, to the agent it belongs to. Restitution repairs the material Damage -- the measurable part of what a wrong destroyed. It does not by itself erase Guilt: the moral debt exists from causation, and only Justice closes it, as the victim directs through Retribution or release. Restitution and Retribution are the two things Punishment works through, and neither substitutes for the other. Only the victim receives Restitution, and Proportion limits it.
