Abstract
Einstein's famous equation is usually read as saying that mass can turn into energy. But if nature is infinite change all the way down, then there is no stuff to turn into anything - so what is really happening? This paper answers that question using only ideas the Infinite Change framework already had, and gets something unexpected in return: an explanation of the speed of light. The argument is that space does not contain a barrier at 300,000 km/s. Instead, the faster a thing changes, the less of it is left over to keep being itself - and the speed limit is simply the point where there is nothing left over at all. This single idea explains four separate facts that physics normally treats as unrelated coincidences. No heavy mathematics here; the technical derivation is published separately.
The Problem With “Mass Becomes Energy”
E = mc² is usually explained like a recipe: take some mass, convert it, receive energy. A nuclear reactor is described as though it were burning matter the way a stove burns wood.
But that explanation quietly assumes there is a substance sitting there waiting to be converted. In a universe made of infinite change, there is no such substance. There are only patterns of transformation that hold together long enough for us to name them. Nothing in that picture can be converted, because nothing in that picture is a thing.
So either the equation is wrong, or we have been reading it wrong. This paper argues the second, and shows that reading it correctly hands us the speed limit for free.
What the Framework Already Said
Two earlier ideas do all the work here, and both are already published.
- Persistence. Some patterns of change hold their shape. A whirlpool keeps being a whirlpool even though no water stays in it. Persistence is a measure of how much of a pattern's activity goes into staying the same pattern.
- Resistance is the opposite of persistence. Where a pattern is strongly established, change flows easily along it; where it is not, change is resisted. Earlier work wrote this as a simple rule: resistance equals one divided by persistence.
That rule has been sitting in the framework since 2025. What nobody did was ask the obvious follow-up question: what happens when a pattern changes so fast that its persistence runs out?
The answer turns out to be the speed of light.
Nothing Is Ever Still
Start with the framework's strictest commitment: there are no static objects. Not “objects that happen to be moving slowly” - none at all. Everything that exists is composing, transforming, reconfiguring, permanently and without exception.
This means a rock sitting on a table is not doing nothing. It is working extremely hard at one specific job: being the same rock from one moment to the next. That job is invisible to us because it succeeds so completely, but it is the only reason the rock is still there.
A thing at rest is not a thing with no activity. It is a thing spending all of its activity on remaining itself.
A Fixed Budget, Not a Growing Pile
Now the key move. Every pattern has a total amount of change it is engaged in, and that total is what makes it the pattern it is. It cannot do more changing than it does. Call this its budget.
The budget gets split between two jobs:
- Being itself - reproducing its own structure, moment to moment. This is what we experience as the thing existing, and as time passing for it.
- Going somewhere - shifting position relative to everything else. This is what we experience as motion.
Here is the whole argument in one sentence: the budget is fixed, so every bit of change spent on going somewhere is change not spent on being something.
Think of a juggler walking across a stage. The faster they walk, the more of their attention goes into walking and the less is available for the balls. Nobody imposes a speed limit on the juggler. The limit is the point at which they are putting everything into walking and the juggling has stopped - at which point they are not a juggler any more.
Why Going Faster Gets Harder
Notice what this predicts. Getting faster does not cost a fixed amount. Each increase has to be paid for out of a budget that has already been partly spent, so each increase costs more than the last.
Physics measured this long ago. Pushing something that is already moving fast is far harder than pushing something slow - the effective heaviness of a fast-moving object grows without limit as it approaches light speed. Working the framework's own rules through carefully reproduces that relationship exactly, with nothing added by hand.
So the speed limit is not a wall you crash into. It is a slope that gets steeper and steeper, forever. You never arrive at it. You just find each step costs more than the whole journey so far.
The Speed Limit Is Where You Run Out of Yourself
Follow the budget to its end. As a pattern spends more and more on motion, less and less remains for being itself. At the limit, the remainder is zero.
And that is the whole explanation:
The speed of light is not a speed. It is the point at which a pattern has nothing left over to be itself with.
The light cone - the boundary physicists draw around what can influence what - is not a fence standing in space. It is the surface where persistence reaches zero. Nothing is being held back by it. There is simply nothing left to hold.
Four Facts That Are Really One
This is where the idea earns its keep. Standard physics knows four things about light. All four are true, all four are taught separately, and none of them explains the others:
- Light has no mass.
- Light experiences no time - a photon does not age between emission and absorption, even across billions of years.
- Light has no rest frame - you cannot catch up with a beam and see it standing still.
- Nothing with mass can ever reach light speed.
In this framework these are not four facts. They are one fact said four ways. All four are what it means for a pattern to have zero persistence:
- No persistence means no mass, because mass just is the amount of change a pattern spends on being itself.
- No persistence means no ageing, because time passing for a thing is that thing reproducing itself, and there is none.
- No persistence means no rest frame, because there is no persisting thing there to be at rest.
- And nothing with mass gets there, because having mass means having persistence, and arriving would mean having none.
A theory that turns four coincidences into one consequence has done something, even if it has not yet done everything.
Why Everything Has the Same Speed Limit
There is a loose end in ordinary relativity that is rarely pointed out. Einstein did not derive the constancy of light speed - he assumed it. It is a postulate, put in at the start because experiments demanded it.
Here it does not need to be assumed. The limit sits at zero persistence, and zero is the same everywhere for everything. There is no such thing as one object's zero being different from another's. Every pattern with any persistence at all faces the same edge in the same place, and anything sitting on that edge is already there.
The universality of the speed of light is the universality of nothing.
What About E = mc² Then?
Return to the opening problem. If mass is the change a pattern spends on being itself, then E = mc² is not describing a conversion at all. It is describing what the budget looks like when it is all spent on one job.
When a reactor “converts mass to energy”, nothing is transmuted. A pattern that was spending its budget on holding itself together stops doing that, and the same activity is now spent differently - as motion, as radiation, as heat. The books balance because the books were always balanced. We simply renamed the columns.
The original objection stands, and is now precise: mass does not change into anything. What changes is how the budget is divided.
Infinite Change, Finite Speed
One apparent contradiction is worth clearing up, because it is the reason this paper exists. If change is infinite, how can there be a limit on it?
Because the two quantities are not the same quantity. The amount of change you can pile onto something is genuinely unlimited - you can keep pushing forever, and each push does something real. What is limited is velocity, and velocity is not an amount of change. It is a ratio: how much of the budget goes to motion compared with how much goes to being. A ratio of two parts of one budget cannot exceed the budget, no matter how large the pushes get.
Infinite change and a finite speed limit were never in conflict. They are the same structure described in two different variables, and mistaking one for the other is what makes the speed of light look mysterious.
What This Does Not Explain
Honesty about limits is part of this framework's method, so here are the gaps, plainly.
- It does not explain why light travels at 300,000 km/s rather than some other number. The argument shows that a universal limit must exist and why nothing crosses it. The actual figure is a matter of the units we chose - and in fact, since 1983 the metre has been defined using the speed of light, so the number is now a convention rather than a measurement. A theory that predicted the value would be strictly better than this one.
- It borrows one step it has not proved. The argument needs the universe to rule out closed loops in time - a claim this framework has long made but never demonstrated. So the speed limit has not been proved outright; it has been shown to rest on the same unproved foundation as the impossibility of time travel. Two mysteries have become one. That is progress, not a proof.
- It says nothing about gravity. Earlier work in this series tested seven ways of producing gravitational attraction from these ideas, and none of them worked. Nothing here changes that.
- It says nothing about why space has three dimensions. That remains the framework's oldest open problem.
What Would Prove This Wrong
Three specific ways this could fail:
- A massless particle found travelling slower than light, or a massive one found travelling exactly at light speed. Ordinary physics would record either as a surprise and carry on. This framework could not survive it, because it claims mass and luminality are the same property.
- Faster-than-light transport that leaves the transported thing intact. If any such scheme ever worked, this framework insists the thing sent must arrive degraded, having spent the persistence that made it what it was. An undamaged arrival refutes it.
- Light speed found to be exactly identical in cosmic voids and in dense filaments. If the limit is set by local persistence, it should vary very slightly with the surroundings. The predicted difference is around one part in a thousand trillion, far below what anyone can currently measure - and the direction of the difference has not yet been worked out, which is a fair criticism of the idea as it stands.
Conclusion
The framework already contained the answer. It defined resistance as the inverse of persistence in 2025, and then never asked what happens when a pattern changes fast enough to exhaust its persistence entirely. The answer is that it stops being a pattern - and the surface where that happens is exactly the light cone.
Three things follow. The speed of light is not a speed but a boundary condition: the place where persistence reaches zero. Mass is not a substance but a rate of self-maintenance, which is why E = mc² describes a re-division rather than a conversion. And infinite change is perfectly compatible with a finite speed limit, because the thing that is infinite and the thing that is limited were never the same thing.
What the universe resists is not motion. It is the attempt to move without remaining anything - and the reason that resistance exists at all is that without it, change could not happen in any order, and unordered change is not change but a static blur.
The speed limit is not a brake on change. It is the condition that lets change be change.
