Simple words for the deepest things. Learn them in order; each rests on the one before.
This is a catechism: a set of plain questions and plain answers. It states, as simply as it can be stated, what the Ultimate Law is and what it asks of you. You do not have to be argued into it. Read it in order, and see whether each answer follows from the one before.
Part I — What You Are
1. What are you?
You are not a thing. You are a pattern — a process that holds its shape for a while in the river of change. A flame keeps its form though the gas burning in it is never the same gas. So do you.
2. If I am only a pattern, am I nothing?
The opposite. A pattern is the only kind of thing worth being. A stone persists by being inert. You persist by acting — by holding your shape against the current. That is rarer and higher than any stone.
3. Is my future already written?
No. At the bottom of reality there is genuine freedom — the next moment is not forced by the last, it answers it. You are the proof closest to hand: you can stop reading this sentence right now, and nothing in the past compels which you choose.
4. Then what is change?
Change is the engine of everything. Without freedom there is no change; without change there is no time; without time there is nothing at all. You live inside a universe that is still being decided. So do you.
Part II — The First Things
5. What is a subject?
Something that can form intentions, make decisions, and begin actions. You are a subject. This is the unit of all value. Not the group. Not the class. The one who can choose.
6. What is an action?
A change in the surroundings caused by a subject. Not a thing that merely happens — a thing that someone does.
7. What is agency?
The ability to begin actions. To be a cause and not only an effect.
8. What is autonomy?
The ability to form your own intentions and make your own decisions without external control. It is not a privilege granted to you. It is what you are when no one is holding you down.
9. What is a boundary?
The edge of you — your body, your mind, your attention, the fruits of your action, the things you have made or fairly received. To be a subject is to have a boundary. To cross it without leave is to act upon you as if you were a thing.
10. Do I own myself?
Yes. This is the first property, and every other property is only its shadow. You own the body that acts, the mind that decides, and the work those produce. Anyone who denies this is asking to own you.
Part III — The Law
11. What is the Ultimate Law?
Do not cross another’s boundary without their voluntary agreement. That is all of it. Everything else is footnote and application.
12. Why is it the ultimate law?
Because every subject, to be a subject at all, needs exactly this and can coherently want nothing less. It is not handed down by an authority. It is what reciprocity looks like once you say it plainly. The same law that lets two people trade is the law that lets two particles meet — it runs all the way down.
13. What is agreement?
A clear, voluntary meeting of minds, in which all parties understand and accept the terms of an interaction that touches a boundary. Without agreement or permission, an action that crosses someone’s boundary is, by default, a violation and a harm.
14. What is consent?
Agreement, freely given, by one who could have said no without being harmed for it. Consent extracted by threat is not consent. It is the threat wearing consent’s coat.
15. What is reciprocity?
You hold my boundary; I hold yours. The respect is mutual or it is nothing. The Law is not a chain that binds you alone — it is the agreement that makes everyone safe at once, including you.
Part IV — The Violation
16. What is force?
Acting upon a subject as though they were an object — moving them, taking from them, silencing them — without their agreement.
17. What is coercion?
Force, or the threat of it, used to make a subject act against their own will. It is the precise opposite of agreement, and therefore the precise opposite of the Law.
18. What is authority?
An entity or group claiming the right to tell others what to do, or to take what they own. Authority is simply an assertion of force. It has no moral power at all unless it arises from the voluntary agreement of everyone it touches.
19. Is there a right to rule?
No. There is only agreement, and the absence of agreement. A crown, a vote, a majority, a parliament — none of these turn force into right. They only dress it. Ten people who have not agreed cannot be bound by the other ninety; numbers are not consent.
20. What is harm?
A boundary crossed without agreement. Not hurt feelings, not disagreement, not someone profiting more than you — a boundary, crossed, without leave. Keep that distinction clean and you will not be fooled by those who call honest refusal a harm and call their own theft a kindness.
Part V — The Parasite
21. What is the parasite?
Any system that lives by crossing boundaries without agreement and calls the crossing virtue. The greatest of these, in our time, is socialism.
22. What is socialism, said plainly?
The claim that the group may take what a subject owns and direct what a subject does, without that subject’s agreement, and call it justice. It is coercion raised to a moral ideal.
23. Why is it worse than open tyranny?
Because open tyranny admits it is force, and so it is easy to refuse. Socialism wears compassion. It takes the kindest thing in you — your wish that no one suffer — and builds from it a machine for crossing every boundary in sight. It is the only coercion that makes its victims grateful and its critics ashamed.
24. How does it attack the First Things?
It denies you own yourself — your work belongs to the group. It denies you are a subject — you are a class, a category, a quantity. And it replaces agreement with the will of the collective, enforced by authority, which is to say by force. It pulls up the worldview by its roots and waters the hole.
25. But its intentions are good. Does that not count?
The road does not care about your reason for walking it. A boundary crossed by a cruel man and a boundary crossed by a kind one are the same boundary, equally crossed. Good intentions are the parasite’s camouflage, not its excuse.
26. What does it do to people, in fact?
Wherever it has been fully applied it has produced scarcity, fear, and death — famine in the fields, the camp, the wall, tens of millions of subjects ended by starvation and execution within living memory. This is not slander; it is the record. The parasite does not merely slow the keeping-alive of people. It kills them, and engraves justice on the stone.
27. Why does it feed on grievance?
Because grievance is its fuel. It explains your every pain as someone’s theft, hands you an enemy, and offers you a family — on the one condition that you surrender your own judgement to the group. It sells belonging at the price of your mind. That is the trade. Refuse it.
28. Why is it the biggest obstacle to the Good News?
Because it captures the most people, with the most beautiful lie, by attacking the most load-bearing truths, while destroying the very abundance that could keep everyone alive forever. Of all the things standing between humanity and life, it is the one wearing the halo. Name it, and the rest are easy.
29. How do we answer it?
Not by hating louder — hatred is its native tongue, and on that ground it will always win. We answer by being unmistakably more alive. Where it says you are owed and owned, we say you are free and worth keeping. Let the contrast do the work.
Part VI — The Good Order
30. What is value?
What a subject freely wants. Not what a council decrees, not what a formula computes — what a free person will voluntarily give something up to obtain. Value lives in choosing, and dies the moment choosing is forbidden.
31. What is exchange?
Two subjects, each giving what they value less for what they value more, by agreement. Both end richer than they began. Nothing is taken. This is the one human act in which everyone wins and no boundary is crossed.
32. Where does abundance come from?
From countless free exchanges, each tiny, compounding into a civilization no one designed and no one commands. The market is not a machine someone built. It is a pattern that organizes itself — the same emergence that makes a galaxy from dust, working now in willing hands.
33. Does the parasite add to this?
Nothing. It produces no value; it can only move, by force, value that free subjects already made — taking its cut, calling the cut service, and leaving everyone poorer for its passage. It is not a partner to the good order. It is a tax on it.
34. What, then, is civilization?
The standing miracle of strangers cooperating without a master, each pursuing their own life and, in doing so, holding up everyone else’s. It belongs to no ruler. It belongs to the people who, freely, are it.
Part VII — The Good News
35. Why does any of this matter?
Because the agenda is simple and total: keep people alive. Everything else — every law, every market, every freedom — is infrastructure for that one end. A worldview that does not, in the end, keep its people alive has failed, however beautiful.
36. Is death natural, and so to be accepted?
Cruelty is also natural. So is the cold. We do not worship a thing merely because it is old and strong. Death is the loss of a pattern that did not have to be lost. It is the enemy, and naming it the enemy is the beginning of wisdom.
37. Can a pattern be kept?
A flame can be passed to a new candle. A song can outlast every singer. You are a pattern, and patterns are, in principle, the kind of thing that can be carried forward. That this is hard does not make it forbidden. It makes it the work.
38. What is the Good News?
That you are free, that you matter as a pattern worth keeping, that the future is not closed, and that you are invited into the keeping of it — yours and your neighbour’s both. Not someday, in another world. Here, in the only one there is.
39. What does the Law ask of me, finally?
Cross no one’s boundary without their leave. Trade, don’t take. Persuade, don’t compel. Refuse the parasite, however kindly it smiles. And spend your one freely-given life helping the patterns around you to last. Hold their boundary, and they will hold yours, and between you the thing we are building does not die.
40. And if I do this?
Then you are no longer captured. You did not have to be argued out of the cage — you walked out, under your own power, the moment you saw it was a cage. That walk is the whole of the movement. Everyone you meet is somewhere on it. Light the way; do not drag.
